After crossing the border from Ivory Coast into Ghana, we decided to explore the northern part of the country. Our destination was Wechiau, where we planned to see the hippos in the Black Volta River. The road was full of potholes, so we had to drive carefully to avoid them. We also saw some huge termites along the way.
The Sudanese-inspired architecture of the mosques we passed on our journey fascinated us. Finally, we arrived at the river, where we hoped to see the hippos that live between the borders of Ghana and Burkina Faso. The locals have learned to coexist peacefully with these dangerous animals, and there are many myths surrounding them.
Unfortunately, due to the high water level during the rainy season, we could not see many hippos. We could only see their heads peeking slightly out of the water and disappearing again into the dark water. We were disappointed but still grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful part of Ghana.
