Istanbul, also known as Catstanbul is the capital of cats.
More than hundreds of thousands of cats roam through the streets in the megacity. While visiting the city you won’t find a corner where you can’t find a cat sitting.
One of the main reasons for the huge amount of cats in Istanbul is that the citizens provide them with food, shelter, and water.
There are many gardens and parks where people leave food and water, drawing a large group of cats towards it. Thus, in many restaurants as well shops, you can find a tip box to fundraise for stray animals.
Therefore it isn‘t strange to see cats sleeping in stores or even strolling around in Mosques.
Even the most famous Mosque Hagia Sofia is home to many stray cats.
One of the inhabitant cats of the mosque became in the meantime a well-known celebrity and has many followers on Instagram.
