Banc D´Arguin National Park

Rawness

The National Park of Banc D´Arguin is one of the World Heritage Sites, located in Mauritania between Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. It is a major site for migratory birds and breedings birds, including Flamingos, pelicans, and terns. Even marine mammals can be seen all year round like dolphins and orcas.

One of the characteristics of the region is the vast sandbanks with their regular mudflats. Undoubtedly creating the perfect environment for birds.

Certainly, only a small indigenous community of seven villages has the allowance to live and fish in the park. In a matter of fact, to protect the environment, motorized boats are not permitted in this region. Hence the villagers are obliged to use traditional fishing techniques. Guaranteeing that humans and animals can live in harmony.

Clearly, visiting this region is a must-do, as it still has a raw nature with its huge varieties of birds and fish. Having some days off from civilization as no network is available and the possibility to stay away from any human interaction.

Sandpit ahead

Prepare yourself to go off the path. Nevertheless, there is only one paved road in Banc D´Arguin. Further, food, water, and fuel supplies should be filled up to the maximum. Considering the villages in this region, only have fish and basic supplies.

After Boulenoir, it is possible to hit the old Sandpit route to Nouakchott. A 4×4 car, a lot of patience as well the urge for adventures is necessary to follow these paths. In a matter of fact, many people get stuck in the sand. Sometimes even for days.

Surely, we took the off-road path at the entrance of Shamy, spending our time north of Banc D´Arguin, close to Arkeiss. From our viewpoint, one of the most beautiful places to spend time here.

We parked our car in a quiet bay with dolphins jumping in the water. Enjoying the sunny days, with the fresh ocean breath while some sailing boats from the fishermen slide through the water.

Officially wild camping is not allowed in the park thus there are different camps to stay.
